Home
The Hon. Perry Christie, Prime Minister, and other
members of the Christie family officially opened the Nurse Naomi Christie Home
for Senior Citizens on Friday November 28th, 2003. The BCMC
will manage the home in conjunction with the Bahamas
Government. Presently the home provides 24-hour affordable
care for up to 13 residents aged 60 and over.
The home was named in honour of Nurse Naomi Christie a
dedicated Methodist and a life long contributor to the
Bahamas. Nurse Christie
Mrs. Rosamond Kemp was appointed as the
Administrator and Mrs. Patricia Johnson as the Assistant
Administrator. The following persons have been appointed as
Caregivers: Mrs. Dillis Forbes, Ms. Phyllis Bastian, Mrs.
Louise Brown, Mrs. Melanie Russell, Mrs. Priscilla Johnson and
Ms. Sherry Thompson. Today, Mrs. Beth Fox-Carey serves as Administrator of the Centre.
The BCMC Board that will manage
the home includes: Mr. Gordon Pinder, Chairperson; Mrs. Astrid
Brookes, Assistant Chairperson; Mrs. Paula Hunter, Treasurer;
Mr. Oswald Munnings, Assistant Treasurer; Pastor Charles
Lewis, and Mr. And Mrs. Earl Pinder, Mrs. Rosemary Williams
and Mrs. Marva Russell-Minns of The Department of Social
Services.
The opening and running of this home is indeed a
�proud� moment for the Bahamas Conference of the Methodist
Church as they have joined hands with the Bahamas Government
to ensure that each person who lives in the home is treated
with care, dignity and respect.
About Nurse
Christie
Nurse Naomi Anna Christie was born at Tarpum Bay,
Eleuthera on October 21, 1920. She entered The Bahamas General
Hospital in 1937 and after four difficult and challenging
years, she graduated in 1941 as a nurse. For more than fifty
years, she worked as a nurse and midwife and her services were
much in demand up to the time of her retirement. She received
several national awards in recognition of her long and
distinguished career as a nurse including the Independence
Silver Jubilee Medal and Certificate.
She married Gladstone Livingstone Christie in 1942 and
their union produced five children. She was a Methodist and
worshipped regularly at Wesley Methodist Church, Grants
Town.
Nurse Christie died on September 16, 2001 at the age of
eighty years.
